It looks like there is finally an end in sight to a very long winter. Now that spring is just around the corner you might be looking for something to do outside. Plymouth County Conservation offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities in it's many wildlife areas.

IGO Hike-N-Seek 2009

Plymouth County Conservation is very excited to announce that the 2009 IGO Hike-N-Seek event will be hosted at our very own Hillview Recreation Area. So what does that all mean?

IGO stands for Iowa Geocachers Organizations http://www.iowageocachers.org/ .

Geocaching is kind of like hide and seek or a big scavenger hunt. People will hide things in parks, in town, basically anywhere they can. These things can be itty bitty all the way up to humongous. They mark the spot with their GPS and log the coordinates on a website. To find the hidden object you go to the website, download the coordinates to your GPS unit, then you try to find the hidden treasure.

The Hike-N-Seek will start with a CITO (cache in trash out) on Friday September 25th at 4pm. Competition registration will begin at 8am Saturday morning with the competition starting at 10am. This is a 24 hour competition throughout the whole county.

Hillview Recreation Area is located just west of Hinton in Northwest Iowa. Hinton is the first stoplight north of Sioux City on US Highway 75.

Hillview offers 3 campgrounds, hiking trails, a fishing pond, and an elk herd.

There is no cost for the event, no pre-registration, and no age limits. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend this event.

Spring is almost here. It is time to say goodbye to cabin fever and GET OUTSIDE!!! There are some opportunities for you to do just that.

April 25th Prairie Rescue from 1-3pm at Five Ridge Prairie
Help the prairie fight shrubs and shade by removing it with loppers and hand tools. Please call 712-947-4270 or email to register for this event. The prairie thanks you!

May 1-3 Free Camping Weekend at Hillview Park Iowa residents only
All three campgrounds will be open for the season. Camping fees for non-residents are $10-$15 depending on which campground you are in.

May 22-24 Memorial Day Weekend Campground Programs at Hillview Park
The fun starts at 8pm on Friday night with a movie in the park.
Saurday we will start at 10am looking for critters in the pond, make ice cream from rocks at 2pm, learn to cook on a campfire at 5pm, and finish off the day with a night hike at 8pm.
On Sunday we will start again at 10am looking for insects in the prairie, go on a scavenger hunt at 2pm, learn about reptiles at 5pm, and finish the weekend with some star gazing.

No license? No problem! Take the family fishing this weekend at any Iowa lake, river or pond.

We at Plymouth County Conservation, in Northwest Iowa are going to start using this blog to keep the public informed about things happening at our parks and conservation areas. We will post information about the tubing hill, campgrounds, public programs and classes. We will let you know how the fish are biting and if the campground is full for the weekend.

The tubing hill at hillview park near Hinton, Iowa is closed until we get enough snow.

The campgrounds will open May 1st.
